    梅雨はつゆと発音します。
梅雨/tsuyu : continuous rain before the start of summer.
About 1200 years ago in China (Tang dynasty), they already used "梅雨” meaning continuous rain before the start of summer, because rain begins around the time the plums are ripe.
Meanwhile, in Japan, the adjective "tsuyukeshi" which was derived from the noun "tsuyu"(dew) existed since the Heian period (794-1192). It meant "damp". It fits the rainy season. So people imported the term 梅雨 and reads つゆ/tsuyu.
梅 and 雨 do not read つ/tsu and ゆ/yu, but they made it read つゆ/tsuyu. We call this phenomenon 当て字/ateji.
